The Dallas Cowboys starters didn’t play well vs. the Houston Texans in their Week 4 preseason game. Tony Romo and Miles Austin played into the 3rd quarter, but were only able to hook up for 2 receptions for 35 yards. The Texans have a tough secondary, but the Cowboys should have been able to get more going. The offensive line will be the death of this team.
Typically the starters won’t play much (if at all) in the final preseason game, but I’d expect Jerry Jones to keep his boys out there a little bit after that horrible performance they put on vs. Houston.
The good news is Miles Austin is safe as the team’s #1 WR no matter how poorly they play in the preseason.

Miles Austin saw his first action of the year in the Cowboys Preseason opener against the Raiders last week. Miles didn’t play much but did record two catches for 33 yards and one rush for 3 yards. His long catch was 24 yards from Tony Romo. Miles Austin and Tony Romo had a great on field connection and should hook up for a dozen touchdowns this year and maybe 1,200+ yards. It’s exciting to see Miles back on the field and come out of the game injury free.
He’ll get a little bit more work in Game 2 of the preseason – maybe an entire half. We’ll have a Game 2 preview for you in a few days.

Tonight the Dallas Cowboys kick off their 2010 NFL Preseason schedule at 9:00 EST in Cowboys Stadium against the Oakland Raiders. I wouldn’t expect much from Miles Austin tonight – maybe 1 or 2 receptions at the most. The Cowboys will likely run him out there for a series (maybe 2) just so he can get used to the game environment again. The opening preseason game is mostly for rookies and guys fighting for roster spots. Miles is a Pro Bowler and knows what he’s doing.
The biggest thing for Miles to do tonight is catch a ball or two and head to the sideline 100% healthy. Then he can look up in the stands at Kim Kardashian and think about what’s going to go down after the game.
Doesn’t matter who wins this game, but I’m going with Cowboys 35-17.

Dallas Cowboys Executive Vice President Stephen Jones was interviewed on KESN-FM last week and had a lot to say about the contract situation with Miles Austin.
In terms of money and contracts, is there anything of high priority, such as a new contract for Miles Austin, that the Cowboys want to wrap up before the first regular season game?
Well, Miles is the number one priority for sure when it comes to signing somebody. He is definitely the first one we’re going to address. At the same time, we’re trying to get our hands around what our future is in terms of the system we’re going to be operating under and we certainly want to gather all the information and try to make as good a decision as we can, because we’re not going to sign Miles for peanuts out here. It’s going to be something very significant, which he deserves, but the one thing different about our team than a lot of other teams is we’ve already signed a number of our players and our cap situation, our financial situation, is different and then when we come back and we have a new CBA and there is a cap, then we have to be prepared to operate under that and so we want to be very educated before we make this decision but I think history shows we’ve gotten the players signed that we want to get signed and Miles is obviously at the top of our list in terms of the type of player we want to have on our team.
Are the Cowboys currently in talks with Miles Austin and is there a timetable to get him signed?
No, there’s no time table. As I said, this is something that’s evolving and our labor situation is obviously as well and we’re trying to gather all the information that we can. So, we really haven’t had any detailed talks at this point. The only thing I would continue to say is he’s definitely the number one priority and we don’t ever see Miles playing anywhere but the Dallas Cowboys.

If that title doesn’t make you cringe then I don’t know what will. With Dez Bryant already limited due to injury, the Dallas Cowboys have been moving pieces and it looks like Miles Austin might land on Special Teams for kickoff duty. In the Saturday practice he was out there working on his return game. This might be just so he is ready in the case of an emergency, or maybe the Cowboys want to get him in on the action in real games?
I’m not sure, but having your Pro Bowl wide receiver in on special teams is just not something you want to see. Other teams have done it (Jaguars with Maurice Jones Drew) but the chance of injury is too great. I’m hoping this was more of just a conditioning drill to get Miles ready for the season.
What are your thoughts? Would you want to see him returning kicks?

The Dallas Cowboys opened up training camp on Saturday in San Antonio. Miles Austin is there and practicing with the team, despite not receiving a new long term contract this offseason. He remains hopeful to get something done before the season starters – but it might likely come in October once the team confirms he can still play at a high level and last season wasn’t a fluke.
